Last Friday night, the Canning Vale community gathered at The Last Local for a special Movember fundraising event, raising over $8,000 for men’s health causes.
The event featured a variety of raffles, including cartons of beer, wine, hampers, and pub vouchers, with all funds raised from the raffle tickets going to the Movember Foundation.
Owner of The Last Local in Canning Vale, Mickey Phull, is thrilled by the overwhelming support the event received and the true sense of community spirit that was on full display.
“I was really surprised by how much money we raised. It was incredible to see the community come together like this, and the generosity from our suppliers and patrons was amazing,” Phull said.
“The event was a true reflection of the community coming together, with local businesses like Byford Smiles contributing an $800 voucher and a local hairdresser donating a voucher for a free men’s haircut, all while our regular patrons played a part in supporting a great cause.”
The highlight of the night was the auction to shave off Mickey’s moustache, with Rex Perkins generously donating an astounding $3,000 to take on the honour, which was matched dollar for dollar by Mickey himself.
More than $2,000 was raised through the raffles, further supporting the great cause.
Phull expressed that the turnout and contributions exceeded his expectations for a first-time event.
“The energy and enthusiasm from everyone, staff, customers, and volunteers, was awesome; you could feel the sense of community, it was something truly unique,” Phull explained.
“I’m so fortunate to be part of this wonderful community. It’s not just about having a successful business but giving back and making a real difference. This is a local family business, and we’ve really built something special here. People come here regularly; it’s like a second home to them. ”
Looking ahead to next year, Phull hopes to make the event an annual charity fundraiser, with a different cause rotating each year.
“This year, we focused on men’s health for Movember, but next year, I’m considering an event for breast cancer awareness to continue supporting important causes,” he said.
“It truly was a great night, and I want to thank everyone involved for their support.”
