A 20-year-old man has been charged after allegedly riding a motorcycle at nearly three times the speed limit through a school zone in Kenwick.

Police say the rider was travelling at 113km/h in a 40km/h zone on Royal Street, near Cooper Avenue, around 7:45 am on Friday, April 4 — right as students would have been arriving at nearby schools.

The Suzuki motorcycle was caught on a speed camera, and officers later impounded the bike. It’s also alleged the rider failed to properly display his P-plate.

The Piara Waters man has been charged with reckless driving in a confiscation zone and failing to display P-plates. He is due to appear in the Armadale Magistrates Court on May 23.

Road Policing Commander Mike Bell said it was the second serious speeding incident in a school zone within days.

“Safety measures around school zones are in place for a very good reason – to protect children who are considered vulnerable road users,” he said.

“It’s extremely disappointing to see this kind of behaviour continue.”

Commander Bell also pointed to a recent incident where four teenagers were caught racing and another driver was clocked at almost 100km/h in a school zone just days before.

“This past week is a reminder that WA Police can be anywhere, anytime and if you drive like this, your vehicle will be impounded,” he said.

Police say they plan to visit every school zone in the Perth metro area at least once this year.
