A mural for respected local doctor and former Canning mayor Mick Lekias is scheduled to be installed in the Riverton Leisureplex in October.
The project has been in negotiations with the family for nearly two years
When this was first presented to council a substantial petition was presented, George Beacroft, of Canning said in a question to the Canning Council meeting on Tuesday night.
“This was brought about by the great respect Dr Lekias was held in the city,” Mr Beacroft said.
“This must have come before the council nearly two years ago. We’ve been waiting a long time and it is about time this was put in position,” he said.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the council had to be very careful how it answered the question because there were some real sensitivities around the mural.
“Everybody wants to commemorate the life of Dr Mick Lekias but there are some real sensitivities with the family and that’s why it has taken so long and I apologise to the community for that,” he said.
Director of customer and community Dr Sarah McQuade said council officers were in communication with the family and the artist.
“We are working with them in accordance with their schedules and commitments and at this stage what we have agreed we are looking at an October install date for that artwork and that’s in agreement with the artists and the family,” she said.
