The new Beeliar Ward councillor Yaso Ponnuthurai said helping develop the Willetton Precinct Master Plan was her first goal while on council.
Ms Ponnuthurai was elected to replace former councillor David Brown as a Beeliar Ward representative at last month’s Local Government Election and was sworn into council on October 31.
The Beeliar Ward includes the suburbs of Willetton and a small section of Leeming.
Ms Ponnuthurai said she was excited to be sworn in to council on October 31 and wanted to work with residents to get the project moving.
“I can’t wait,” she said.
“I’m very much looking forward to my next four years of challenges and how well and what I can do for the City of Canning and the Beeliar Ward people.”
The Draft Willetton Precinct Master Plan was released for public comment following the October 17 council meeting and included proposals to increase parking at the Willetton Basketball Association stadium and Southlands Boulevard, building a new bowling club, new civic building, children’s play area and barbecue areas and improving pedestrian crossings on Pinetree Gully Road.
As it is only a proposal the city said it had not estimated the project’s cost.
More feedback wanted
Ms Ponnuthurai said developing the proposal was a priority.
“It will be in my head,” she said.
“I’m hoping that the whole process goes through a good transparency process and I’m hoping we will have plenty of input from the public.”
She said she would try to identify how to increase public feedback and engagement in proposals like the Willetton plan.
“That is very important,” she said.
“If people haven’t read the papers, haven’t much media knowledge or don’t know where to look, how are we going to get to them?
“It’s all about connectedness and staying connected with ratepayers is my challenge.”
