The Sikh community unveiled the “We are here” mural last Saturday at the entrance road of Canning Vale Gurdwara, at the corner of 280 Shreeve and Nicholson roads, Canning Vale.
Gosnells mayor Terresa Lynes and Sikh Association of WA founder and president Harbhajan S Bejawn, alongside local MPs, city councillors, community leaders, and members attended the event.
The mural conceived a decade ago spans a significant portion of the entrance road, with the painting completed last Friday.
The mural’s creation involved extensive community consultation over two weeks, engaging more than 800 residents, including input from the Punjabi School, Seniors Program and Sunday Sangat.
The mural’s theme celebrates Sikh culture and community in WA. It portrays the journey of the Sikh/Punjabi community, depicting the past, present, and future generations.
Historical elements show early Sikh pioneers, the present-day section highlights the community, and the future section symbolises hope and aspirations with young Sikhs stepping forward.
It is meant to strengthen community cohesion, serving as an educational tool for younger generations.
It also promotes cultural awareness and inclusivity among the broader public, attracting visitors and standing as a symbol of the multicultural fabric of WA.
