The City of Armadale voted to implement parking restrictions on the verge opposite Forrestdale Primary School in a bid to reduce the number of cars obstructing the flow of traffic at peak hours.

Council voted earlier this month to install no stopping signs along Broome Street adjacent to the school which will restrict parking from 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm.

Mayor Henry Zelones said residents and parents concerned about cars being parked unsafely on the verge had notified the city of the issue.

He said there was a safety risk for parents and children walking to the school.

“Cars parking haphazardly on the verge during the school drop-off and pick-up times could possibly restrict sight distances,” he said.

“There is ample parking provided in the on-road parking bays directly located across from the drop-off and pick-up points however many cars continue to park in a disorderly fashion on the verge.”

He said rangers would be in the area to enforce the restrictions.

Forrestdale Primary School principal Wayne Bariolo said he was hopeful parents would obey the signs but conceded it might take some by surprise.

“The big learning curve will be the no stopping, no parking and no standing signs,” he said.

“Parents will still be able to pull in for a period of three or four minutes maximum and be able to walk their kids across the road.”

The signs would be installed within two weeks.
