As part of the Armadale Line Active Travel project, residents from the City of Canning and surrounding suburbs can partake in a free community bike riding session every Saturday for the remainder of this month.

Known as the ‘Pedal Palooza’, between 1 and 3 pm at the Canning River Eco Education Centre in Kent Street, Wilson, members of the public will have the opportunity to enhance their bike riding skills through various activities.

They can explore the picturesque Canning River Trails, participate in a fun treasure hunt and challenging obstacle course, learn to navigate the local pump track, and get their bikes inspected by professional mechanics.

Each Saturday afternoon session will start from the Canning River Eco Education Centre and will build towards a final ‘Champions Ride’ on the last Saturday with 5km, 10km and 15km route options.

The project has been launched by the Department of Transport in partnership with the PTA and METRONET in an attempt to get members of the public more active and to discover alternate ways of travelling, as the Armadale Train Line remains closed.

Director of the Active Transport project, Michelle Prior, believes with the train line being shut down, now is the perfect opportunity for people to rediscover the joys of bike riding, particularly within a community setting.

“Having organised, community-oriented bike-riding activities encourages people to enjoy their neighbourhood, get exercise and see the facilities available in their area,” Ms Prior said.

“Many people have bikes sitting in the garage, but not many opportunities to get out and do things as a greater part of their community.”

The event is mostly suitable for families with children who are reasonably comfortable riding a bike, and an adult must accompany all children under the age of 11.

Participants are encouraged to ride their bikes to the events; however, if needed, a limited number of bikes and helmets are available. Please contact info@cyclesense.com.au if you require a bike.

Although the event is free, registration is essential due to limited places. Please reserve your spot online through the City of Canning’s website.
