An elderly Kelmscott man who was assisted by Armadale police officers during a pet emergency said he wanted to thank the officers who went out of their way to help.
On the night of February 21 Mike Munninger was at home when his Chihuahua-Jack Russell crossbreed named Rusti suffered a seizure.
He said the nine-year-old dog was always full of energy running around the hills property but when he saw something was wrong he immediately sought help.
“In my pyjamas I raced down to Ark Veterinary on Albany Highway,” he said.
“As I pulled up, a cop car pulled up alongside me they were obviously on a patrol.”
Mr Munninger said the officers were wondering what he was doing wandering around at midnight since the vet had closed at 6.30pm.
When he told the police his dog was in a serious condition and left in his car they responded immediately.
“They said there’s nobody here, the only way is we go as quickly as we can to Murdoch Animal Hospital,” he said.
Mr Munninger said the officers assisted him and his dog into the back of the police car and drove as quickly as they could to the specialist care centre.
He told the officers they did not need to go out of their way for him but they said it was part of their job.
Unfortunately Rusti did not survive the ordeal and veterinarians said he had died minutes after the police car had arrived in Murdoch.
The officers returned Mr Munniger to his car in Kelmscott about two hours later.
Mr Munninger said he appreciated the policemen’s help and recognised officers often got a bad wrap in the public eye.
“They said Rusti was such a lovely little fellow and they were very sorry,” he said.
“Two very, very kind cops, really good fellows.”
