Three prisoners were taken to hospital after the prison truck they were being transported in was hit by a vehicle on the corner of Roe Highway and South Street in Canning Vale last night.

Just after 6pm the Serco truck was travelling along South Street toward Hakea Prison.

The other vehicle was entering South Street from the Roe Highway off ramp when it collided with the truck’s front driver’s side.

A Department of Corrective Service spokesman said there were seven prisoners in the truck at the time and three had to be taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital.

“Three prisoners were taken by emergency services to Fiona Stanley Hospital for precautionary medical assessment – no serious injuries to report,” he said.

“The four other prisoners were returned to Hakea Prison.

“The prisoners medically assessed at Fiona Stanley returned to Hakea prison in the early hours of this morning.

“The van was travelling from court to Hakea Prison.”

The crash caused two lanes to be closed on South Street.

Police reopened the road at 8.30pm.
