A new purple bench will be unveiled and blessed in Canning early May

A new purple bench will be unveiled and blessed in Canning on 17 May, as part of a special community event to remember lives lost to domestic and family violence.

At the heart of the day’s activities is a solemn ceremony marking the installation of the bench, which is part of the Purple Bench Project by the Centre for Women’s Safety & Wellbeing. The initiative aims to honour victims while raising awareness about the ongoing issue of family and domestic violence.

The bench will be blessed by a Bishop and is expected to be unveiled by City of Canning Mayor, Patrick Hall. Local state and federal MPs, as well as community organisations, are also expected to attend.

The church behind the event, Anglican Parish of Canning, has a strong focus on supporting victims of family and domestic violence. Forty per cent of the revenue from its op shop, Treasures on George, goes directly to organisations like AnglicareWA and Starick Inc. It also backs Christmas gift drives for women and children staying in local refuges.

The May 17 event will take place across the Anglican Parish of Canning’s precinct and include a range of community activities, but the purple bench blessing will be the heart of the day.
