Grassroot sports and major transport projects in Perth’s southern suburbs are shaping up as key election promises ahead of the May 3rd Federal election.
The Liberal Party and the Labor Government, as campaigning picks up pace, have released their projected funding plans for the area.
AN amount of $250,000 for Corinthian Park Tennis Club has been allocated if the Liberals win.
An elected Dutton Liberal Government said it will deliver $250,000 for the development of new padel courts at Corinthian Park Tennis Club in Shelley.
The club, established in 1974, is a well-loved fixture in the community.
The funding would allow it to diversify its offerings by introducing padel, a fast-growing racket sport often described as a mix between tennis and squash.
“Corinthian Park Tennis Club has been a cornerstone of the community for decades,” candidate for the Federal seat of Tangney Howard Ong, said.
“This project will help the club adapt to changing interests and attract new members of all ages.”
Senator Matt O’Sullivan also welcomed the commitment.
“Padel is gaining popularity across Australia, and this funding will give local residents the chance to try something new and stay active,” he said.
The funding forms part of the Liberal Party’s broader pitch to “strengthen local communities”, and Ong said it showed the party’s focus on sport, inclusion, and community wellbeing.
Labor invests $95 million in transport upgrades

Meanwhile, the Albanese Labor Government said it is delivering a major transport overhaul for Perth’s southern suburbs, with a $95 million investment focused on easing congestion and planning for population growth.
The highlight of the package is a $90 million upgrade to the Leach Highway and Manning Road intersection in Bentley, one of the city’s most congested junctions.
The project includes a grade-separated interchange, aimed at improving safety and slashing travel times for over 44,000 drivers each day.
An additional $5 million will go toward future planning at Murdoch Station, the busiest transit hub outside the Perth CBD. Planned upgrades include more bus stands, improved passenger facilities, and a new multi-storey carpark.
Local MPs have backed the plan, calling it a long-term investment in the region’s liveability and economic health.
“This is a game-changer for residents commuting across the south,” Federal Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas said.
“Less time in traffic means more time with family, better productivity, and safer roads.”
Matt Keogh, Member for Burt, said the project would also support economic growth. “Easing congestion helps our workforce move more efficiently — and that supports businesses, jobs, and the entire local economy.”
With the federal election approaching, the race is on to secure voter trust, and both parties are making it clear that Perth’s south will be a key part the upcoming election.
