A painting by talented Southern River College student Raihana Kazimi will be on show in this year’s Young Originals Exhibition.
Now in its 14th year, the exhibition showcases the best visual art produced by WA secondary students.
At just 12, the Year 7 student will be one of the youngest artists to have her work displayed.
Raihana’s painting “Hope” features monarch butterflies, bright blue skies and a transformation.
“The sky represents dreams of the future, while the butterflies show a hopeful mind,” she said.
“Having dreams and a hopeful mind means that you are optimistic about the future and believe that you can achieve your goals.
“By taking actions towards your dream, you can make your goals a reality.”
Ashley Meaden, head of arts at Southern River College, said Raihana was producing outstanding work.
“Her use of colour and symbolic elements is advanced for her year group and she is developing her personal style,” he said.
“Her current painting ‘Hope’ encapsulates the spirt of human evolution and aspiration whilst promoting dreams and passion.”
Mr Meaden said the exhibition was an exciting opportunity for Raihana.
“Young Originals provides much-needed exposure for young artists,” he said.
“They are able to showcase their work to the West Australian community which will reach far beyond their postcode.
“Students are able to see that their work is appreciated by an audience and this confidence and feedback is fundamental for our artists’ progression.”
Raihana, who wants to be a professional artist one day, says she feels honoured to have her artwork included in the exhibition.
Young Originals will be held at the Spectrum Project Space, Edith Cowan University, and will run from August 9 to August 29, 2023.
