Rescued swans back in the wild

Many of the rescued swans have been given a new lease on life at Lake Joondalup.

About half of the swans taken in by Darling Range Wildlife Shelter during January’s Forrestdale Lake Swan Rescue have been released into the wild, and the shelter wants to thank the community for its support.

In January The Examiner reported on the massive rescue mission, when nearly 200 volunteers descended on the evaporating lake at the crack of dawn to save immature swans and cygnets from potential predators.

Darling Range Wildlife Shelter took in over 100 of the birds, whom they have been caring for ever since.

“The swans are going really well, we have released about half of them back into Lake Joondalup, and we continue to release about ten a week,” said a worker at the shelter.

“We had to make specialised enclosures, which we did with the help of our amazing volunteers, and we’ve been super blessed with everyone’s food donations and the support of other wildlife shelters who have pitched in,” she said.

The care of the swans has been a huge effort, with trays of vegetables being snapped up in seconds by the growing birds.

“We have received food donations from Woolworths and local residents, but we are still needing support, so any donations are welcome,” said the worker.
