Construction of the long-awaited Shelley Beach Park Playground Renewal project has begun.
Once completed, the playground will become Canning’s first district and multi-generational playground, featuring three play areas catering to children of all ages.
The project has had a substantial funding boost with a grant of $750,000 from Lotterywest.
With an overall budget of $1.8 million it will feature customised play structures, a Park Warrior course, additional tree planting, shade elements, and feature artwork.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the play area will enhance community connection and participation within the area.
“Feedback from the community has been critical in shaping this project, so it’s great to see the plan coming together, with support from Lotterywest, to create a space that the whole community will enjoy,” he said.
“The $750,000 grant will go towards building a hub suitable for all ages and abilities, including physical, sensory, and imaginative play areas that allow children living with disability to play among their peers,” Lotterywest and Healthway CEO Colin Smith said.
“The playground will also feature educational elements, created through the knowledge of Aboriginal leaders on the history of the area, and local flora and fauna.”
Construction began this month. Planned construction works include drilling a new bore to support existing infrastructure and future masterplan delivery, constructing a new shared pathway, building a new playground, and the addition of more parking bays.
The existing playground and some adjacent parking bays will be closed from June 4 through to November to accommodate these planned works.
The new playground is one of 10 to be upgraded as part of the City’s commitment to invest $44 million into local playgrounds, community facilities, community safety, environment, and conservation, which was adopted in the Better Budget 2023-2024.
