Sing Street captures 1980s Dublin and tells the story Cosmo who sets up a band to win the love of an older girl

As soon as 14-year-old Conor played by newcomer Ferdia Walsh-Peelo started singing a-Ha’s hit song Take on Me I knew I was in for treat.

Set in 1980s Dublin, Sing Street is told through the eyes of Conor who takes to calling himself Cosmo.

The movie tells an age-old tale of a young man trying to cope with his parents crumbling marriage, while adjusting to his new school. The kids are rough and the teachers are no-nonsense priests and of course there is the girl Conor is trying to impress Raphina (played by Lucy Boynton) who plays the girl with an older boyfriend.

Cosmo turns to his older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor) for advice who tells him that no woman could truly love a man who listens to Phil Collins.

Inspired and determined to win Raphina, Cosmo puts together a band immersing himself in the music which made the 80s an unforgettable decade.

Featuring hits by The Cure, Duran Duran, The Clash and David Bowie Sing Street is a coming of age story about friendship and first love.

It is the perfect blend of nostalgia, humour and drama, which also stars Mari Doyle Kennedy and Aidan Gillen.

If you liked the 1991 film The Commitments then you will love Sing Street.
