Students defeat staff members of Lumen Christi College in the Principal’s soccer cup 2019.

Students won the Principal’s Soccer Cup this year as part of the Lumen Day celebrations at Lumen Christi College.

The cup is awarded to the winning team at the end of the year following a series of sporting games between year 12 students and college staff.

In 2018 staff members won the cup with a 1-0 start to the students fol- lowing their victory in the Principal’s Cup cricket match earlier in the year.

This year it was the students who gave it all with a score of 2-0.

Sports coordinator Josh Ainsworth said the first half of the match looked like the staff could have had it with several narrowly missed shots.

The second half, however, saw the students’ spirits lift after a very crafty goal from resident senior soccer star Rhyan Johnson, followed by a second in a one-on-one attack with the keeper in goals.

Staff responded with some desperate attacks only to be beaten by the keeper and the siren to the students.

Sports captain Chris Dixon said it was great to play against the staff as they had been coaching them since year seven.

“This was an opportunity to show them what we have learnt,” he said.

Sports captain Shelby McDonald said the experience brought everyone together in a fun and friendly game.

“All the other students cheered us on which really added to the atmosphere and it was great to come away with the win over the staff,” she said.
