Mayor Terresa Lynes, centre, and Councillors Diane Lloyd, Peter Abetz, Serena Williamson, Balli Singh and Saiful Islam joined Southern River MLA Terry Healy at Sutherlands Park to view progress on the new Youth Entertainment Space.

Construction of The Youth Entertainment Space (YES) at Sutherlands Park is slowly taking shape, with the installation of colourful steel columns and beams for the roof now in place.

The $6.5 million project currently under construction by the City of Gosnells is being funded with $4.5 million from the City and $2 million from the State Government.

The youth precinct will include a skating arena with a social space and a multi-purpose area for games like basketball, netball, and futsal, all enhanced by coloured LED lighting.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the installation of the roof beams and steel columns helped grasp the true scale of the project, which would allow the space to be used year-round.

“This fantastic facility was designed in consultation with local young people and will be the first of its kind in the Perth metropolitan area,” she said.

“YES represents a significant commitment to the young people of our community.”

Southern River MLA Terry Healy said it was great to see the project taking shape and is looking forward to its completion.

“YES at Sutherlands Park will be a fantastic facility for young people in the City of Gosnells for many years to come,” he said.

The project is part of the City of Gosnells Master Plan to redevelop Sutherlands Park.

The plan includes new sporting club facilities, an Aquatic-Leisure-Sports Hub, reconfigured ovals, a youth entertainment space, an all-abilities playground (now open), and a new Huntingdale Community Centre, with the goal of establishing a central location for sport and recreation in the local community.

The youth plaza is expected to open in mid-next year.
