The section of Tonkin Highway between Kelvin Road and Roe Highway will be widened from four to six lanes.

A portion of Tonkin Highway between Kelvin Road and Roe Highway is one step closer to being widened from four to six lanes after the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) finalised its report on the proposed upgrade.

In its 115-page report, the EPA has recommended the project can proceed but should be subject to strict conditions to prevent environmental impacts on the Greater Brixton Street wetlands.

“Environmental values will be protected, and the health, diversity and productivity of the environment will be maintained for the benefit of future generations.” the report said.

However, the EPA also highlighted the challenges of continued development along the Swan Coastal Plain and, moving forward, is cautious of cumulative effects on key environmental values impacting the EPA’s goal of meeting their key environmental objectives.

“The EPA will need to take a cautious approach in its assessments to ensure that, cumulatively, impacts to certain environmental values across various proposals are appropriately limited.”

The construction of two new intersections and a Principal Shared Path is also included in the proposal.

The EPA’s report on the project is now open for public appeals and feedback and closes on August 26. The Minister for the Environment will make the final decision on the proposal.
