Trees across Shelley and Riverton were destroyed in acts of vandalism over the weekend.
One councillor has called on residents to review home security footage to help catch the perpetrators.
Over the November 18-19 weekend vandals targeted trees at the Shelley foreshore and Adenia Park.
Some of the destroyed trees had grown up to five metres tall.
Bannister Ward councillor Ben Kunze, whose ward includes the affected areas, said he was disappointed community work had been deliberately set back.
“The city, along with a host of volunteers from various community organisations, invests considerable time, energy and resources into improving the Canning River, the regional park, as well as the broader natural environment,” he said.
“These actions by some unknown culprits show utter contempt for their tireless work.
“This kind of behaviour needs to stop – it’s despicable.”
The City of Canning has one of the lowest tree coverage rates of all local governments in Western Australia and has been implementing processes to try reverse that statistic.
This has included a proposal to crowd fund tree planting across the city, and installing two trees for every one removed.
Mr Kunze said the weekend’s incidents had damaged the council’s attempt to increase greenery around the city.
“This sort of vandalism sets us back,” he said.
Residents were asked to review any home security footage they may have from the weekend that could help identify the perpetrators.
