Sometimes real world events are so crazy and messed up that you just have to laugh.
Therein lies the premise of The Hangover director’s new film War Dogs.
War Dogs follows the real life story of two 20-something-year-olds from Miami David Packouz played by Miles Teller (Divergent, Fantastic Four) and his childhood friend Efraim Diveroli played by Jonah Hill (Superbad, Wolf of Wall Street) who get into gunrunning.
David is working as a masseuse just to make ends meet when Efraim comes back into his life.
Efraim has been making money selling guns to the government and enlists the help of David to take their business to the next level.
The pair eventually work their way up to a huge government contract but are forced to pursue some shady means of fulfilling it.
The plot would seem ridiculous if it wasn’t true and Hill and Teller pull off their bumbling characters well.
There are some edge of your seat scenes like when the pair drive a truck full of weapons through an Iraqi war zone while chased by terrorists.
The movie falters with its message. What was uncovered when David and Efraim were arrested in real life was gaping flaws in the US military procurement system, which led to lots of money falling into the wrong hands.
Rather than leaving the film aghast at how taxpayers were being taken for a ride I left it with a mild smirk at the toilet humour.
