A group of Harrisdale residents are desperate for modifications to their street, which they said had become a hotspot for speeding and dangerous driving.
Silvershot Avenue in central Harrisdale is a 50 kilometre per hour residential-zoned street between the larger roads Wright Road and Gracefield Boulevard.
However since the opening of a Reilly Road roundabout in August, which connected the suburb to Nicholson Road, Silvershot Avenue has become a regular route for cars entering and exiting the area.
Residents said the change had made the street dangerous and Penny Armstrong said the biggest issue with safety was how the road curved around Heron Park.
She said drivers tended to straight-line the blind corner and speed.
“No one is keeping to the left down here, and they’re going too fast,” she said.
“It needs calming.”
Ms Armstrong said she had tried to appeal to Main Roads and the City of Armadale about modifying the road by installing traffic slowing devices, but without success.
“I contacted the City of Armadale more than a year ago,” she said.
“I also contacted Main Roads.
“I was getting pushed backwards and forwards with one saying it was the other’s responsibility and the other saying the same.”
Traffic on Silvershot Avenue takes all shapes including cars with trailers, SUVs and large building-site trucks, which cut through the estate every few minutes even during working hours.
Ms Armstrong said even 50 metres down the road cars were still often on the wrong side, which meant slowing devices or a mirror would help the situation. Other residents suggested several possible changes including painting a solid white line down the centre, building a roundabout or island in the area, speed bumps, better signage or a lower speed limit.
Member for Jandakot Yaz Mubarakai met with the group and said he was concerned about safety on the street and would talk to the City of Armadale about investigating modifications.
“We’ll have to get them to look at the options of mitigating this issue,” he said.
“It’s narrow, yet it’s got a 50 kilometre per hour speed limit.
“Straight-lining of the street is obviously a big problem.”
Harrisdale resident Keyur Kamdar started a petition in response urging the city to take action.
The City of Armadale was contacted for comment.
