Youth leaders recruitment drive

Recruitment is underway to find the next generation of youth leaders to take part in the Y WA Youth Parliament, which is celebrating 30 years in 2025. The apolitical leadership and civic management program is run by Y AW and empowers young people to have a voice in Parliament and their local communities.

The four-month program is calling for young people aged 15-25 from Perth metropolitan and regional Western Australia, representing all 59 electorates, to come together to address issues facing young people, create meaningful connections and develop leadership skills that can be used to create real social impact.

“This unique program empowers young people to have a say on important issues while building leadership and public speaking skills and understanding civics education,” chief executive of the Y WA Dr Tim McDonald said.

Two such recruits from the 2024 program include Amit Kunnath from Maddington and Neha Binoj from Willetton.

Amit represented the state electorate of Thornlie in the program, and this experience now has him working in the electorate office of Federal Member for Burt Matt Keogh.

“I know that many of the key skills I use in this job were acquired through the Y WA Youth Parliament Program,” he said.

“The most enjoyable part of YP24 was the opportunity to debate one another’s bills in the Legislative Assembly chamber. It was an experience like no other. YP truly gives you an engaging way to learn how law and policy are formulated.

“I would strongly recommend YP to all interested applicants, as you’ll get to meet some really epic people who are just as committed to making the world a better place as you are.”

The Y WA Youth Parliament is organised by a dedicated team of young people, including volunteers and former participants, with the assistance of the Department of Communities. Applications for the 2025 program are now open and close Monday 3 March. To apply for the 2025 Y WA Youth Parliament program, visit  https://bit.ly/YouthParliamentApplication2025
